This design-build project seamlessly blends mid-century craftsmanship with modern functionality. Working alongside WCC Builders and Chris Snyder, whose trust in artistic freedom makes every project enjoyable, we crafted a space that speaks to both history and innovation. Clients Kurt and Rachel Carlson embraced the vision, allowing for a design deeply rooted in authenticity and character.

The foundation of the project began with the trusses—designed to echo the dimensional, hand-built aesthetic of the 1950s. This intentional craftsmanship tied into Kurt’s passion for vintage motorcycles and cars, with waxed and burned dimensional lumber and period-correct hardware reinforcing the nostalgic yet timeless appeal.

A centerpiece of the home is the Elizabethan-style cast aluminum staircase, originally found at a garage sale in Long Beach. Cast in England, it now serves as a striking focal point, guiding movement through the hallway into the live-work space and up to the loft. With two treads missing, we enlisted a Long Island foundry to cast exact replicas, completing the staircase with a historically accurate lead-based red oxide primer and multiple coats of single-stage black lacquer.

Every detail enhances the connection between form and function. A custom pivot door creates a seamless transition between spaces, while handcrafted concrete countertops feature aggregate selected to match the tonality of the hardwood floors. Outside, the framing is intentionally positioned to frame Mount Rose, integrating the home with the surrounding Sierra landscape.

This project embodies the beauty of blending classic materials with contemporary design, preserving the past while creating a space built for the future.
